Congratulation to Francesca Schiavone for being the FIRST Italian woman to win a grand slam!! Her dream run to the final continued onto a perfect ending by upsetting 7th seeded Australian Samantha Stosur 6-4 7-6 (2). It was a high-quality final and the intensity and tension easily eclipse recent finals despite the lack of major stars.
Seeded 17th and 29 years old, Francesca became the first women in nearly 20 years to win the title seeded outside the top 10 and the oldest player to win a slam since someone else did it in the 60s at Wimbledon at age 30.
Congrats again and hopefully she'll have a good grass court season, probably her least favorite surface.
